What is data citation?
Data citation is a new concept raised by the press and data sharing community at home and abroad. It refers to the use of data as an important citation material, like the cited literatures. It is cited and explained in the reference section in the articles. The reference format of data is generally provided by the data sharing center.
Why do we need the data citation?
To reflect the intellectual property rights of data. Data is not only the result of physical labor, but also the fruit of intellectual activities, so it has intellectual property rights. Data sharing needs to protect the intellectual property rights of data. So that we can protect the rights and interests of data producers and make data sharing sustainable development. The core intellectual property rights of data include the right of signature, the right of publication and the right of recompilation, among which the right of signature is the most basic right. In academia, traditional literature citation is the best way to reflect the right of signature, which has been widely recognized by scientists. Therefore, data citation can be used to reflect the intellectual property rights of data.
Data usage tracking, resource interconnection and data evaluation
It can be known which documents use data by searching through data citation. The data center aggregates these information and feeds it back to the data provider, which can protect the basic rights to know of the data providers.
Through the reference literature, we can realize the interconnection between the documents, and realize the mining and discovery of more knowledge. Through the data citation, we can establish the interconnection between data and literature, and carry out more knowledge discovery and mining.
Many data owners have no incentive to participate in data sharing, because the current evaluation system of scientific research results lacks the evaluation of data results. Data citation can fundamentally encourage the data providers to participate in data sharing, because data and literature can be linked together, and the impact indicators (such as SCI) for scientific data can be established through the citation of data, so as to evaluate the contribution of data workers more accurately.
How to do the data citation
The data center provides two alternative recommended citation formats, including reference citation format and declaration format in the article.
Reference Form: Recommended Citation Format
If the journal supports bibliographic citation of data, please use the data citation format as follows:
The reference format includes 5 basic citation elements. Data users can edit the format according to their format requirements. Users are advised to use this citation format first.
Data Author List. Data Title. Data Publishing/Publishing Unit. Data Publishing/Publishing Time. Data DOI Permanent Address.
MA Yaoming. Asian Monsoon Experiment on the Tibetan Plateau (GAME/Tibet) Data Set for Global Energy Water Cycle. Big Data System for Pan-Third Pole, 2011.
Liu Shaomin, CHE Tao. HiWATER：Dataset of Hydrometeorological observation network (automatic weather station of Jingyangling station, 2014). Big Data System for Pan-Third Pole, 2016. doi: 10.3972/hiwater.255.2015.db.
Data citation format in the text
If the journal does not support the reference format, the data center recommends the text annotation format. Text annotation means that when the data used is introduced in the text, it is attached to the data used in the form of DOI annotation.
For example in the text:
...Plant functional types map in China (doi:10.3972/westdc.001.2013.db) ...
After it is marked in the text, please explain the data sources in the acknowledgement.
Various references provided by the data center
Direct reference to data
Data center provides two ways of data citation that are direct reference of data and direct reference of documents. Direct citation of literatures is usually decided by data authors according to their own wishes, and they provide direct citation of 1-2 literatures.
Suggested References for Data
Data center also provides documents closely related to data, which are generally provided by data authors, and may be related to the research background, preparation process, processing methods and quality evaluation of data. It is recommended that data users refer to these articles as well when using the data.
Documentations from Data Users
The articles published by the data users, which are fed back to or collected by the data center, will also be attached to the data introduction page. Users can also refer to these documentations and feedback instructions.
Other illustrations of data citation
Data citation object. Data citation objects include explanation documents, related documents and data itself. There is no unified standard at home and abroad. In this case, the user's suggestions should be taken into account first in the Cold and Arid Region Scientific Data Center when choosing which way to implement the data citation format.
Many journals or editorial departments do not agree with data citation in the reference section because data citation is a new thing. In this case, in order to be able to accurately apply the statistical data, the data center suggests that users should give priority to labeling and explaining the data sources in the text.
The data description in the text is varied, including explanation of data sources or acknowledgement. It can be achieved the purpose of data citation through full-text search as long as the "search term" is accurate from the point of view of tracking, no matter where the data description is placed. However, in many cases, data users do not follow the recommended format to explain, once the "search term" changes, the retrieval results will be inaccurate. In this case, the Cold and Arid Region Scientific Data Center uses DOI to track the data reference accurately. It is to register DOI for each data, and then require users to use this DOI encoding in the text description. No matter how the content changes, as long as the DOI encoding is accurate, this document can be tracked.
